Letters to the editor - Thursday, July 10, 2008

We need to drill for oil, natural gas

Congress and the tree-huggers won’t let us drill off the USA for natural gas or oil. Natural gas is used to heat our homes and churches, make insulation, auto parts, anhydrous ammonia – products that Hoosiers must have.

Please request Congress to unlock the Democratic prohibition on drilling for oil and natural gas. Fax or call them. The cost of gas and diesel is a shame on all congressmen who won’t let refineries expand and won’t let the U.S. drill.

If you mail a letter, it takes two weeks to reach congressmen, because all postal mail to the Capitol is tested for anthrax. Call or fax them instead.

We must write them ourselves and ask them to let us drill now. Drill in the USA and off the coasts. Let the refineries expand. Unlock ANWR.

Don’t think NBC, CBS, ABC or AP will tell our story. Don’t think the California or Nevada congressmen care how badly Indiana needs gas, diesel fuel and oil.

We Hoosiers must carry our own message to Washington, if we want to survive.

Cars on batteries is a good idea

Are gas prices ever going to go down? Same question I’d ask.

In 2009, gas prices are supposed to go up to $7 a gallon. I don’t think gas prices will ever go down, in less we get a new president that can be able to change the prices lower for everybody in the U.S.

I heard that people are going to make cars that run with batteries. That would be pretty cool.

Beach visit wasn’t what it should be

What is wrong with people today? Are they so self-centered, rude, lacking consideration of other people, lacking common sense, or all of the above? Yes, the answer is all of the above.

On the July 4 weekend we went to enjoy fireworks at Kokomo Beach. It’s a yearly tradition for many people. Find a place to park, take your lawn chairs, a blanket for the kids, refreshments, and have a good time with your family. This year it was not to be.

We found what we thought was the ideal spot on the lawn and staked out our area. All of a sudden, we were bombarded by cars, trucks and four-wheelers and they were headed toward us. Passed children playing, people in lawn chairs and people on blankets. It looked like something from a movie. I expected the military to come in next.

Now think, there are no security officers, no policemen, you are in a vulnerable situation. The sound of laughter was replaced by people screaming at their children to move out of the way.

There were many other places to park. We saw elderly people that had parked and walked there. Does this sound like a nice, relaxed evening that it should have been?

All of us should take some time and show some compassion and respect for other people, and we could make this a better place to live.
