Not much to vote for in president

I have voted in every presidential election since FDR and have never seen more incompetent candidates seeking the office of president of the U.S., as we have today.

One is a first-term senator who has spent half of his term campaigning for a higher office. He has very little, if any, experience of performing the duties required to be president or commander-in-chief of the military.

His political opponent, who we’ll refer to as Father Time has sided with our present president too often. Most Americans realize G.W. Bush has not only placed our country in bankruptcy, but has assisted in the elimination of an enormous amount of American jobs.

This upcoming election could be called a catastrophe.

The only choice voters have to help our country rebuild our great nation is an untrained rock star or Father Time. Hopefully these candidates can select a V.P. who has some experience.

Support Davis, Kirk on Sept. 5

For quite some time, my late husband, Jack Davis, was the only ex-POW in Howard County. At age 18, Jack was captured in the Korean War and was a POW for 29 months.

He was called a reactionary because he would not succumb to their propaganda. In being a reactionary, they were going to send Jack and others to the Siberian salt mines for the rest of their lives at the end of the war. However, with his mother’s persistence and the help of the Red Cross, the exchange of prisoners was stopped and Jack was eventually released.

Having told you this, I now want to explain to you why my son, Capt. Greg Davis of the Kokomo Police Department, is so much like his father. You see, Greg inherited those same basic principles of integrity and character. I have always believed that character is what you see in a person when they think no one is looking.

On Sept. 4, my son will celebrate his 29th anniversary with the department. Sadly, one day later, on Sept. 5 beginning at 10 a.m., he must defend himself as will Lt. Jeff Kirk, of alleged policy violations where they are being threatened with demotion and suspension.

His father would have been proud, as I am, that Greg has stood by his convictions and has not given in to threats or intimidation. His record at the KPD stands on its own. With almost 29 years completed and retirement right around the corner, looking the other way would have been much simpler and would have caused much less heartache for him, his friends and his family.

You have to remember though, he’s Jack Davis’ son. In every situation there needs to be a hero. And it’s a proud mother who is able to say that Capt. Greg Davis and Lt. Jeff Kirk have taken the high road of which they should be proud.

I only hope that the members of the Board of Works who will stand in judgment of them will exercise that same character in judging them with fairness. It has taken Greg and Jeff 29 and 27 years, respectively, to reach this point in their careers and I would ask that the Board not allow politics, job appointments or personal friendships to stand in the way of a fair and just hearing.

If you believe in my son and hope as he does that justice will prevail, I would ask that you join a proud mother in support of her son at City Hall on Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. to show this city and Board that along with God’s eyes, we will be watching.
