Pit bull owner should be cited
This is regarding the incident with the two pit bulls that bit two children in Highland Park Aug. 26. I am the mother of the boy that was bitten.
I read in today’s paper that the owner came forward, which I am glad to hear, but the fact remains that two kids were bitten. It could have been a lot worse than it was.
I want to thank the lady that helped my son and got the dog off of my son before it could do more serious damage. I just wish that the owner would have had some rabies tags on the dogs so maybe I wouldn’t have had to take him to the doctor’s office for a shot, and then have him be put on medication.
People, please keep your dogs tied up. Especially pit bills. These dogs are dangerous.
I’m glad that the police shot them before they could hurt anyone else. I hope the Police Department will do the right thing and write a citation to the lady for public nuisance for the dogs not having rabies dog tags and running at large.
She can also feel free to pay for his doctor’s office call and for his medicine he had to have. But I won’t hold my breath on that to happen.

Drug court should serve the neediest
This letter is in response to the Tribune’s article about Howard County Drug Court’s first graduate. Congratulations to her! She is an inspiration and an example that hard work and perseverance can triumph in any seemingly helpless situation. May she be blessed in her future endeavors as she leads a productive, drug-free life.
I have been incarcerated at the Howard County Jail since January on drug charges. This is not my first brush with the law. I have been arrested many times. The one thing these arrests have in common is that they all occurred while I was in pursuit of or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I am smart, articulate, and have been proven responsible – before finally hitting rock bottom. I am a drug addict.
Since my arrest, I have practically begged to be admitted into drug court. I’ve been told that since I was not a woman of child-bearing age, I don’t stand a chance of getting a shot at this program. What is someone to do if nobody hears their cry for help? How is it fair that some people get the help they need while others get cast out? Is the program a success if it fails to serve the very people who need it the most?
My addiction has cost me everything I’ve ever owned or loved – including the two sons I raised by myself for five years. Prison has proven ineffective in addressing my chemical dependence and has failed in preparing me to fight it. Drug court has nothing to lose in giving me a chance. If they do and I fail, then they could and would get to prosecute me fully. If I made it (and I would), then they would have saved a life and given me back to my sons. I’m sorry that I’m not a woman of child-bearing age, but I still need help.

Palin nomination was just ‘brilliant’
Talk about bursting a bubble. Obama’s expected rise in the polls was not evident until his speech last night and now, a few hours later, it is gone again. McCain did political thievery for sure, but it was brilliant. McCain proved he is the one for true change.
In Obama’s speech last night, he criticized McCain for being in D.C. for 26 years, yet Biden has been in longer.
Governor Palin brings so much more. She has executive experience, is pro-life, conservative, a record of reform, and last but not least, a woman. She will bring the disenchanted Hillaryites and other disaffected women on board the GOP ticket.
She has a son going to Iraq this month, which cancels Biden’s son and any anti-war push. Maverick McCain = Brilliant!
