Cut spending for tax reform
Both Mr. Greg Goodnight and Mr. Ron Herrell have recently written with explanations of the property and business inventory tax issues. I appreciate their respective efforts to explain and clarify these and other tax issues.
While I also appreciate their suggestions for tax reform, they fail to address the primary cause for the tax issues we face: spending. Their tax reform suggestions revolve around how to shift property taxes to other taxes.
Solutions are not easy. Nevertheless, voters and elected officials must start serious discussions about government spending. Somehow, we must determine what spending is vital and what can be reduced.
If this is not possible, then the consequence is inevitable: Government spending will continue to increase, and taxes will continue to escalate in order to meet expenses.
Decreasing one tax by raising other taxes is not tax reform. To the best of my knowledge, no nation has ever taxed its way to prosperity.
