U.S. gives free pass to Iran nuke desires

The recent National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) release has created an interesting discourse. Liberals say Bush lied. Finally the truth has come out. I think differently. As usual the media is not giving us the full picture. All 16 intelligence agencies are not unanimous in the strength of their concurrence. I think it is encouraging if Iran has halted its desires for nuclear weapons. But what the NIE’s unclassified release said was they “believe” Iran stopped in 2003 due to international pressures. What happened in 2003? We attacked Iraq.

What has caused a flip-flop from as late as 2005 regarding Iran’s intentions? Has the national intelligence agencies finally gotten a backbone and stood up to Bush, the tyrant? If the emergence of a backbone is the reason, then America is well served, but if they are wrong, we are in big trouble. Even the president of Iran has said they are developing a bomb.

Intelligence is often like Monday quarterbacking. Using hindsight, you see the links, but because there was a link this time, will there be a link next time? Time will tell. It worries me that the primary writers of the report were State Department bureaucrats who have always been willing to appease and negotiate. It is the kind of institutional think that allowed Hitler to gobble up the entire European mainland before we entered the world war.

Do we need to bomb Iran now? Probably not. But, because of this report and the media’s (and a certain political party’s) desires, we may never be able to destroy Iran’s nuclear capability when it arises again. And it undoubtedly will arise. We have given Iran a free pass to gear up again and only because so many people want to hate Bush.
