Teen seriously injured in car crash

From staff reports

Two people were injured, one seriously, in a two-vehicle collision late Wednesday at the intersection of 300 West and 50 South.

Tyler Heflin, 16, suffered head and internal injuries and was unconscious at the scene of the 11 p.m. crash. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, and later airlifted by Life Line Helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Sheriff deputies said Heflin was southbound on 300 West in a silver 2007 Chevrolet two-door Cobalt when he failed to stop at the stopsign at 50 South and collided with a westbound 2000 Ford Explorer.

The driver of the Ford, Michelle R. Rigney, 29, suffered minor injuries.

Investigators believe that both drivers slowed, but failed to stop at the intersection. Heflin’s vehicle was struck broadside at the driver’s door. Two passengers in Heflin’s car escaped injury.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Howard County Emergency Management Agency, and paramedics from St. Joseph Hospital. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Corporal Mike Welker at the Howard County Sheriff Department at (765) 457-1105.
