Fred A. Bailey

Feb. 19, 1926 - May 11, 2008

Fred A. Bailey, 82, Kokomo, passed away 8 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2008, at Howard Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Claiborne County, Tenn., the son of Pal York and Clara Nanny (Hopson) Bailey. On Aug. 23, 1943, he married Susie Vandergriff, who preceded him in death on Oct. 10, 1972. On April 21, 1984, in Kokomo he married Virgie O. Earnheart and she survives.

Fred was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church. He was a slitter operator for Miller Steel, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making furniture. He liked helping people with their roofing and building projects.

He is survived by his wife Virgie, Kokomo; seven children, Billie Sue Carpenter, Paul Bailey and his wife Evelyn, all of Kokomo, Sandy Kay Gibbs and her husband Jerry, Sharpsville, David Bailey and his wife Janet, Phyllis Brubaker and her husband Danny, Shirley Johnston and her husband Jeff and Rene Davis and her husband Mark, all of Kokomo; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lee Bailey and his wife Margaret, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Susie; two daughters, Joyce Bailey and Barbara Bailey; two grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Bailey, Clumar Hopson and Herman Bailey; and one sister, Martha Smith.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, Jefferson Street Chapel, 414 W. Jefferson St., with the Rev. Dennis Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
