New campus a step closer

— The State Budget Committee at last has finalized $16.6 million in funding for the proposed Logansport campus of Ivy Tech Community College. That’s fantastic news. Sen. Tom Weatherwax made the announcement during a Third House session on Saturday. In his remarks, Weatherwax noted the impact the new campus would have on Cass County.
The facility will house faculty offices, student common areas, a library, bookstore, meeting rooms and a wellness center. The campus, which will offer eight academic concentrations, will sit on 59 acres of land owned by the college.
Located in the area of Main and 18th streets, the new campus will replace space on East Market Street that the school has been leasing since 1983.
The new college, to be built on a site south of Main Street and west of 18th Street, will pay immediate dividends for Logansport and the surrounding area.
Residents here will be able to take classes that will help them to keep the jobs they already have or to find new jobs. And students just out of high school will be able to get the first two years of college out of the way without ever leaving home.
Site plans for the 81,880-square-foot building earned the approval of the Logansport Plan Commission last month.
Officials are planning a groundbreaking ceremony this spring, and they say construction of the campus should begin yet this year.
That’s a day the entire community will be able to join in celebrating.
