EDITORIAL: Coles provide another gift

Milt and Jean Cole have again set an example for the rest of us to follow.

The Coles have literally changed the landscape of their hometown through their generosity, and this week came word of their largest gift yet — $1 million toward the construction of a new Logansport campus of Ivy Tech.

The Coles, owners of Cole Hardwood in Logansport, have done much through the years to improve the quality of life in this city. Jean Cole, in particular, has invested both sweat and treasure in adding flowers to the city’s landscape.

Last year, they donated an ornate fountain for Jean Cole Park at Broadway and Eel River Avenue.

In 2006, they gave more than $48,000 to support a Reading Railroad program that will provide a new book every month to Logansport youngsters through the age of 5.

And that’s only a small part of the list. Countless local organizations have benefited through the years from the Coles’ generosity.

But with their latest gift, the Coles have played a key role in landing a new community college that will help in training this community’s young people for generations to come.

It would be nearly impossible to offer appropriate thanks for all the Coles have done for Logansport and Cass County. Their generosity is truly astounding.

There’s an old saying that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. It might also be the greatest form of thanks.

Clearly, we can’t all make contributions of the size the Coles have made, but we can do our own small parts.

We can support the charities we see making a difference in our community. And we can roll up our sleeves and put our talents to work for the common good.

There could be no greater tribute.
