Don’t forget your ID card

It’s hard to imagine that any Hoosier wouldn’t have a state- or federally issued picture ID for today’s primary – particularly after all the Democratic presidential candidate visits, including Kempton.

But if you don’t have a valid driver’s license, you still have time to get a state ID card at a Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch. They’ll be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today – an hour after polls close.

If you’re religiously opposed to being photographed, you’ll still be allowed to vote. And if you forget your ID today, you’ll be allowed to cast a provisional ballot.

Indiana’s voter ID law hasn’t been a problem in any Howard County primary or general election over the last two years. In fact, only one of the nearly 11,000 people who voted here in the first primary under the voter ID law didn’t have the required ID. And that person cast a provisional ballot.

If you need a state-issued ID, you’ll need to bring to the license branch a primary document, such as a passport or birth certificate; a secondary document, like a paycheck stub or signed credit card; and proof of residency, such as a utility bill.

Most of us live in this part of Indiana because we care about our families, friends and neighbors who live here, too. With blessings come responsibilities. You have a stake in your community, state and country. We encourage you to vote today.

Just don’t forget your picture ID.
