Maconaquah students injured in crash

Tribune staff report

PERU — Three Maconaquah High School students were injured Tuesday morning on their way to vocational school.

Indiana State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash at 800 South and 200 West in Miami County at 11:23 a.m.

According to Sgt. Rick Brown, a 1998 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Justin L. Allen, 16, Bunker Hill, was west bound on 800 South when it went off the north side of the road for an unknown reason near 200 West. The vehicle went nearly 135 feet before striking a telephone pole, severing a tire and spinning 180 degrees before coming to rest facing east.

Three passengers in the vehicle were injured. Allen was not injured and he was cited for speed too fast to avoid a collision.

Lauren Ramberger, 17, Bunker Hill, was taken by ambulance to Dukes Memorial Hospital with complaint of pain to her back and side.

Donald R. Arnett, 17, also of Bunker Hill, was transported to Dukes by his father. He was treated for complaint of pain and scratches.

April Skyles, 16, Peru, was airlifted by helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with a broken pelvis and collar bone. She is in the pediatric intensive care unit for observation.

Arnett and Skyles were not wearing seat belts which Brown believes would have reduced the severity of their injuries.

“The combination of excessive speed and an inexperienced driver are contributing factors in this crash,” Brown said. “These young people are very lucky. This could have easily been a fatal crash, especially since two of the kids were not wearing seat belts.”

Brown was assisted at the scene by Lt. Matt Bilkey, Trooper T.J. Zeiser, Miami County Sheriff Department and Dukes Hospital Emergency Medical Service.
